Chip Kidd 1960's Batman Japanese Bat-Manga Book Japan

Over at THE SPHINX Blog they did a series of articles where they deeply examine Chip Kidd’s book, “BAT-MANGA: The Secret History of Batman in Japan“. You remember this book, it featured very detailed reprints of long lost manga comic book stories of Batman and Robin that were illustrated/written by Jiro Kuwata in the 1960′s. Great stuff!!

Well, THE SPHINX does a great job at breaking down and analogizing many of the individual panels and does so with a sort of a tongue-in-cheek snarky humor, it’s fun! Now, we’re linking to PART ONE and while there please be sure to view their left side-bar for Parts 2, 3 and 4. Hey, you’ll be both entertained and rewarded!

Chip Kidd Interview Book Cover Design Reflex Blue Podcast

I don’t know why, but somehow this older Podcast Interview with Designer Chip Kidd popped-up on a recent Google search. Like, I thought it was brand-new, but later I found out it was recorded back in 2008. That’s so weird. Yes, this is from five years ago! But hang-on a second, it’s still great to listen to and fun to revisit. This was posted on a website called 36POINT where they cover many different aspects of Graphic Design. There, they have a Podcast called “The Reflex Blue Show” and Chip was interviewed by Nate Voss and Donovan Beery. The questions they pose are pretty interesting and, overall, the discussion is most excellent! They also talk about some book projects that Kidd had going on at that time like Batman’s Bat-Manga, Watching The Watchmen, and his own two novels, Cheese Monkeys and The Learners.

Recently, a Brilliant Custom-Toy Maker, named Deane Aikins, very graciously gave Chip Kidd a totally genius-rendition of a BATMAN figure based on the art of Jiro Kuwata, from the “Lord Deathman” story found in Chip Kidd’s Book, “Bat-Manga: The Secret History of Batman in Japan”. The attention to detail is extremely well done, both in color and scale. Seriously, it’s a great likeness of the character!

Deane has also created some amazing Custom Batmobile Models, a very ambitious personal project to make one of each version starting with the Red Roadster from 1940! The Batman vehicles he has made so far are all really well done and we hope he continues to create many many more! To view their awesome beauty, just CLICK HERE! Also, while you’re there, look for the ones he did that are labeled “Daikins”.

This photo right here is sort of a blast from the past! It shows the original 2008 Display Poster for Chip Kidd’s Book, “BAT-MANGA: The Secret History of Batman in Japan”. Oh yeah, we should mention that this was the store front of MELTDOWN COMICS in Los Angeles, CA. They have a blog that is pretty cool too, just click their name here to check it out!
