THE NEW YORKER Magazine Chris Ware Cover Art

This week please be sure to pick-up the recent issue of The New Yorker Magazine ( Jan 7, 2013 ). For two reasons: 1. It’s an insanely great publication, and 2. Our Friend, the Artist, Chris Ware did the cover art and his artwork, as always, is totally amazing! The “message” of the cover was inspired by the recent Newtown Shooting Tragedy. Plus, it also responds to a previous cover that he did that had a “Back To School” theme and now, the recent event changed his feeling on that. OK, am I making sense here? Sorry, actually Chris Ware wrote a very excellent article explaining everything and how he came about the idea for the new cover and it’s over at the New Yorker website ( link down below).

You can read Chris Ware’s article by visiting this link, THE NEW YORKER.

Oh yeah, here’s an image of his previous cover we mentioned:

christian science monitor book review chris-ware building stories

Here’s some really great news that just came in. Over at the Christian Science Monitor website they just published a very excellent review for Pantheon Books’ latest Chris Ware Graphic Novel, BUILDING STORIES. The review, written by David Unger, is very well thought out and also takes up two whole pages, wow! One quote from the article reads, “Chris Ware’s unusual graphic novel is a triumph of imagination and originality.” But we should just let you read what David had to say in full, so please, just CLICK HERE! ( Thanks David, good job! )

Publishing Weekly Magazine Cover Chris Ware Building Stories Book

In the most recent issue of Publisher’s Weekly Magazine they do a cover story about the “Best Books of 2012″ and, because Pantheon Book’s “Building Stories” Graphic Novel made the list, they chose Chris Ware to illustrate the cover! Wait, there’s more!! One important thing to notice about this magazine cover is that they have a brand-new logo and this is the very 1st time in their publishing history to feature a fresh one… that’s so cool!!

I hope they keep this new one, I completely love it! Down below is an example of the one they have had for a long time. Yeah, it’s iconic, but this new one is so modern & cool. Please keep it PW!!!

Sean T. Collins, a Rolling Stone Magazine Reporter, recently interviewed Jaime Hernandez, Chris Ware, Daniel Clowes, and Gilbert Hernandez. Yes, all four of them, in the same room, at the same time. It’s an amazing dialogue with a lot of insight & some surprising humor. In the article they talk about Graphic Novels, the Art of Comics, Artistic Influences, and what it’s like to make a living doing what they love: Drawing. To read the article just CLICK HERE!

David Sedaris Naked Chip Kidd Book Cover

Here’s a beautiful image that I thought would be fun to share. This is a photo from a Vogue Magazine fashion shoot where, by accident, they also feature the Book Cover for David Sedaris’ Novel, NAKED. Of course this Sexy Book Cover was designed by Chip Kidd. The Model’s name is Doutzen Kroes. Also, Thank you to Fashion Editor Elissa Santisi, who styled this “Summer Accessories” photo shoot.

Yes! This week’s latest issue of THE NEW YORKER Magazine features a beautiful cover with artwork by Chris Ware. It’s main theme is “Back To School” and, like a lot of his art, it is filled with a sense of Melancholy. So, please be sure to hit your local newsstand soon. We also want to mention that THE NEW YORKER did a short Interview and Story about about Chris Ware where they talk about this cover design and his new Graphic Novel book from Pantheon titled, BUILDING STORIES. You can read that interesting article by clicking RIGHT HERE!

As a side note:

To celebrate the release of BUILDING STORIES, Chris Ware will have two separate Art Gallery Openings that together will exhibit 126 drawings used to create the new book. The events will be held at Adam Baumgold Gallery (New York) and Carl Hammer Gallery (Chicago). The Art Shows open on September 8th, 2012 and run until October 27th.

If you enjoy the art of Book Jacket design, or Graphic Design in general, then you owe it to yourself to check out a recent article over at the TIME Magazine Website titled, “The Book Jacket Art of Chip Kidd”. It’s a part of their TIME PHOTO SERIES where they present a small slideshow of images with quotes or information down below the pictures, it’s both educational and fun! They picked 15 Book Covers created by Chip Kidd and they’re pretty interesting to see. I mean, OK the graphics are nice ( not trying to brag, ha ha ) but the really interesting part is reading about the creation of these covers. Some of them are quotes from the Authors & how they felt about the jacket. It’s very thought-provoking. It’s also a bit like “a study of Book Publishing”, if that’s the right way to phrase it. Anyways, I’ll shut-up & let you visit their website so you can see what I mean. Just CLICK HERE! ( Oh Yeah, and Thanks TIME Magazine! )
