VIDEO: Chip Kidd – The Process of Book Cover Design

January 27th, 2014

Here is a short, but very informative, video-taped excerpt from a recent lecture given by designer Chip Kidd on “THE PROCESS” of Graphic Design. As an example Chip shared the design process for the creation of a “book cover job” for an Augustus Burroughs book titled, “You Better Not Cry”. The short version of this story, it turns into a nightmare quickly.

I’m sorry to see this video is no longer available. It was an excellent example of the existence of different points of view. I thought the rejected covers kept getting worse. The final that was used, to me, cut through Kidd’s pastiched failures to the single powerful idea. Really- if they were next to each other on a book table, which would you pick up? Kidd could could have done that. Why didn’t he?
