MAIRA KALMAN Has Been Chosen to Create the 2017 National Poetry Month Poster!

  • date
  • January 12, 2017

The Academy of American Poets is pleased to announce that Boston Globe–Horn Book Award-winning illustrator MAIRA KALMAN designed the official celebratory poster for National Poetry Month, April 2017. Each year the organization distributes a poster free-of-charge to over 100,000 schools, libraries, and bookstores nationwide for their April celebrations.

Known to draw from her own life story and all of its absurdities, Kalman was selected by renowned graphic designer Chip Kidd on behalf of the Academy of American Poets.

“Maira Kalman is the perfect choice to create the National Poetry Month poster,” said Chip Kidd. “She is the John Ashbery of painted illustration, whimsical and haunting, but with more dogs and pastry. Which is always a good thing.”

National Poetry Month, created and organized by the Academy of American Poets, is the largest literary celebration in the world with millions of people celebrating poetry in their communities each April.

The Academy of American Poets provides special lesson plans for teachers during the month, promotes local events, and distributes the official National Poetry Month poster through partnerships with the American Booksellers Association, the American Library Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English. The poster is also available for free upon request on the organization’s website, Poets.org.

About This Class

Chip Kidd is world-famous for designing some of the most innovative book covers of our time. How do his ideas come to life?

This inspirational 35-minute class takes you on a journey through Chip’s process for designing an art poster, a real project he took on for the Brooklyn Book Festival in Fall 2016. As he explores his assignment, research strategy, and even graphic ideas, you’ll see how the best graphic designers — Chip amongst them — are creative and conceptual problem-solvers.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Plan and research a new creative project
  • Evaluate compelling concepts
  • Execute original ideas independently

Plus, each lesson is filled with lesser-known examples of Chip Kidd’s poster work, as well as comparisons to his popular work in book cover design.

Whether you’re creating your own poster, curious about the principles of good design, or just want to see a master at work, this class will help you “think like a designer,” hone your visual instincts, and harness the power of graphic design!

Brooklyn Book Festival and Chip Kidd Debut Official Poster Art #BKBF

The Brooklyn Book Festival, #BKBF, New York City’s largest free literary festival, has unveiled two new custom images created by award-winning graphic designer and writer Chip Kidd. From posters to totes to online portals and social media streams, the 2016 Brooklyn Book Festival will introduce branded elements featuring Kidd’s colorful urban design: the image of a young woman reading a book emblazoned with the Brooklyn Bridge.

“A rock star of book design, [Chip Kidd] is the perfect artist to articulate the vibe of New York City’s hip, smart and diverse book festival,” said Carolyn Greer, co-producer and president of BKBF.

“As a fan (and past participant) of the Brooklyn Book Festival, it was an honor to be asked to create the image for its first art poster,” Kidd said. “My thinking was this: just as books are gateways to amazing places, characters and ideas, the Brooklyn Bridge is such a gateway to one of the most vibrant, diverse and enthralling places on Earth. So I decided to combine the two. Having gotten my professional start in Brooklyn 30 years ago, it is thrilling to contribute this way to one of its most extraordinary cultural celebrations.”

BKBF attracts tens of thousands from around the world to experience spirited discussions between emerging and iconic writers and a lively Literary Marketplace. This fall’s week-long festival begins on Sept. 12 with five weeknights of literature themed “Bookend” programs presented all over New York City. BKBF Children’s Day is Saturday, Sept. 17 and will feature theatrical performances, a dueling draw-off, workshops, picture book and young readers stages and a Literary Marketplace just for kids are all part of the day’s celebration of childhood reading.

The flagship 14-stage BKBF takes place Sunday, Sept. 18. On festival day, 300 writers of beloved works of fiction and nonfiction, poetry and graphic novels will participate in panels, readings and other creative performances of their work.

This year, the festival includes Margaret Atwood, with her first graphic novel, as well as Chester Brown, Phoebe Gloeckner, Sarah Glidden, Kyle Baker (in his first return to BKBF since its beginning), Faith Erin Hicks, George O’Connor, Ben Katchor, Marjorie Liu and MariNaomi, among other prominent artists. This makes it all the more fitting that an artist so deeply involved in comics and graphic arts undertake BKBF’s first festival image.
