About This Class

Chip Kidd is world-famous for designing some of the most innovative book covers of our time. How do his ideas come to life?

This inspirational 35-minute class takes you on a journey through Chip’s process for designing an art poster, a real project he took on for the Brooklyn Book Festival in Fall 2016. As he explores his assignment, research strategy, and even graphic ideas, you’ll see how the best graphic designers — Chip amongst them — are creative and conceptual problem-solvers.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Plan and research a new creative project
  • Evaluate compelling concepts
  • Execute original ideas independently

Plus, each lesson is filled with lesser-known examples of Chip Kidd’s poster work, as well as comparisons to his popular work in book cover design.

Whether you’re creating your own poster, curious about the principles of good design, or just want to see a master at work, this class will help you “think like a designer,” hone your visual instincts, and harness the power of graphic design!

Comic Books and Graphic Novels have a very long history. So… why does all the writing in comic books look alike? Vox’s Phil Edwards looked into it and found an aesthetic shaped by comics culture, technology, and really cheap paper.

Chip Kidd and the 13th DIMENSION Talk About #BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS Gallery Edition

Dan Greenfield, over at the always amazing 13th DIMENSION website, recently got together with Chip Kidd to discuss the release of Frank Miller’s BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS Special Gallery Edition.

For anyone who has not heard about this book it is totally amazing!  To read the full interview please CLICK HERE!

Basically what happened was DC Comics reprinted this classic graphic novel in a DELUXE FORMAT hardcover book but instead of a regular colorized “comic book” version they published it using the original art from the book. In other words, they show the black and white inked pages without color and in their original glory.

It’s pretty cool and the quality is awesome! (Disclaimer: Chip Kidd didn’t design the cover to this book)

In the interview Chip Kidd discusses how he came about to own, not one, but two of the actual pages of the original art by Frank Miller that were used for this book (shown down below).

Also, as a side note, we would like to mention that Chip Kidd did design the cover to the previous, original, reprinting of this graphic novel by DC Comics, both front and back, and we’re sharing pics of those here:

Long time fans of both Charles M. Schulz and the PEANUTS Comic Strip should be pretty excited about this news. In Japan they have plans to dedicate an entire building to the art of “Sparky”! This, of course, is the special nickname of the Cartoonist, Charles M. Schulz.  This special place will be known as the SNOOPY MUSEUM TOKYO and it is opening on April 23, 2016 (architect’s rendering above).

This new museum came about because of  an exhibition of original Peanuts strips and other artifacts from the Charles M Schulz museum which opened in the Mori Gallery on October of 2013 (Photos from that event are posted down below, check out the Replica of Sparky’s real-life Art Studio) and ran through the holidays, closing in January. In those three months the exhibition drew 280,000 fans, demonstrating to the curators of the exhibition that there was a hunger for a world class exhibition of Peanuts art. In other words, Charlie Brown and his friends are loved on a global scale and this facilitated a new location in Japan!

As a Special Side Note:

We are both extremely happy and honored to mention that Chip Kidd will be designing the special catalog for the very 1st exhibition that will be curated by Sparky’s wife, Jean Schulz. The name of the show will be titled, “MY FAVORITE PEANUTS”. This is just 2 months away so please stay tuned to CHIPKIDD.COM for more info!

Another Side Note – Here is Chip Kidd’s Recent ART OF PEANUTS Book:

San Diego Comic Con Announces Michael Cho as 2015 Souvenir Book Cover Artist

  • date
  • April 2, 2015

2015_International_Comic_Con_Souvenir_Book

Comic-Con International revealed the art for this year’s Souvenir Book at a special event co-sponsored with the CBLDF. The event, part of Will Eisner Week, was held at the Society of Illustrators in New York City on Wednesday, March 4. The CCI/CBLDF event was part of an ongoing series of education programs offered by the two organizations.

This year’s book features an incredible cover by illustrator Michael Cho (whose book, Shoplifter (Pantheon), was one of the best reviewed graphic novels of 2014), celebrating the legacy of Will Eisner’s The Spirit. Eisner’s character debuted in 1940 as a Sunday newspaper supplement and in its heyday reached over 5 million readers each week.

The Comic-Con International Souvenir Book is a full-color, keepsake trade paperback that is published each year and given free to all attendees at the event (while supplies last). Comic-Con International 2015 will be held July 9-12 at the San Diego Convention Center.
