Chip Kidd and the 13th DIMENSION Talk About #BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS Gallery Edition

Dan Greenfield, over at the always amazing 13th DIMENSION website, recently got together with Chip Kidd to discuss the release of Frank Miller’s BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS Special Gallery Edition.

For anyone who has not heard about this book it is totally amazing!  To read the full interview please CLICK HERE!

Basically what happened was DC Comics reprinted this classic graphic novel in a DELUXE FORMAT hardcover book but instead of a regular colorized “comic book” version they published it using the original art from the book. In other words, they show the black and white inked pages without color and in their original glory.

It’s pretty cool and the quality is awesome! (Disclaimer: Chip Kidd didn’t design the cover to this book)

In the interview Chip Kidd discusses how he came about to own, not one, but two of the actual pages of the original art by Frank Miller that were used for this book (shown down below).

Also, as a side note, we would like to mention that Chip Kidd did design the cover to the previous, original, reprinting of this graphic novel by DC Comics, both front and back, and we’re sharing pics of those here:

Katherine Dunn, Author of GEEK LOVE, Dies at 70

It’s with a heavy heart that we need to share the sad news about the passing of Katherine Dunn, a completely wonderful woman and exceptional author.

Her connection to Chip Kidd is that he designed the book cover for her iconic novel, Geek Love (Random House, Vintage), and it went on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies. It even became a National Book Award Finalist in 1989.

“Geek Love” was curiously original and imaginative, though some called it bizarre. It revolves around a married couple who own a traveling carnival and breed mutant children as sideshow freaks, both to attract paying customers and to endow their offspring with “the inherent ability to earn a living just by being themselves.”

If you have never read this book then you owe it to yourself to do so, it’s both chilling and life changing.

R.I.P. Katherine, you will be deeply missed by everyone who loves the joy of reading.
