The Book Designer, Chip Kidd, knows all too well how often we judge things by first appearances. In this new, fast-paced, TEDTALKS WITH CHIP KIDD he explains the two techniques designers use to communicate instantly – clarity and mystery – and when, why and how they work.

He also celebrates beautiful, useful pieces of design, skewers less successful work, and shares the thinking behind some of his own iconic book covers.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). If you head over to the POWELL’S BOOKS Bookstore Blog then you can check out a really great interview they did with your favorite Penguin Random House Book Designer, Chip Kidd. Powell’s Books operates four stores in Portland, Oregon, and then another one in nearby Beaverton. They are also known worldwide as an excellent source for rare and hard to find books, but they also keep everything in stock that’s super-current.

So yeah, speaking of “current books”, Chip Kidd (in association with TED TALKS) just published a brand-new book titled, “JUDGE THIS, a TED Original” (144 Pages, Simon & Schuster/TED). The book is an exercise on what makes good clarity and/or mystery in Graphic Design that we all see everyday and sometimes take for granted.

The World is Still Creating JURASSIC PARK Logo Parodies!!

In the graphic design art world Chip Kidd is pretty well known for being the designer/creator of the “Jurassic Park” Movie Logo. Not to brag or anything but it is one of the most iconic images of the 1990’s and is still being used today for the recent release of the “Jurassic World” film.

The funny thing with it being so famous is that is has spawned a ton of parodies. I mean, it’s been used as humor t-shirt images (two shown here as examples) and even graphics offering Pork Bar-B-Q delights. That image is shown down below as a close-up shot. Yes, that’s an actual menu used at “BAR 21” in Manchester, England UK.

TIME – Chip Kidd Judges 6 Books By Their Covers

  • date

detective-comics-27-time

Over at the always insightful TIME Magazine website (Yes, in today’s digital world TIME still exists!) a reporter named Sarah Begley ran a short interview with Knopf Book designer Chip Kidd about a few of his favorite book covers of all time and asked him, “to judge them”. Of course this question was meant to be tied into Chip’s latest book titled, “Judge This (TED Books)” that just came out and was published by Simon & Schuster as a part of their TED TALK Book Series.

As kind of a joke for this post I made a parody graphic of one of the famous covers that Chip talks about in the TIME interview, Detective Comics #27, which we all know as the very first appearance of the Batman!

To see other book covers he chose and to read Sarah Begley’s article on Chip Kidd, please CLICK HERE!
